Hej!

Hej!
Long time no hear… There are many reasons for that: First there was nothing to tell. Then there was something to tell, because I learned so many new things at work – but I started to doubt that you would find MOs (IFIs etc.), PPE, PM, HR and everything else connected to IC not as interesting as I do. Finally, I spent the last months thinking about a creative way to share my life with you. Carrier pigeons, memory with pictures, video messages, dance acts and many other ideas were rejected, so I’ll stick to the good old email with short (or less short) notes. A little persistence might not be bad after all.
It has been seven months now – many things stayed the same, many things changed.
- Meanwhile, I participated in the “Walk of the insane” (100km in 24 hours, hiking – me and my knee (yes, in this case my knee is mentioned after myself, it abandoned me) reached kilometre 86,6. There is still some room left for improvement, but for the first time…), in Leipzig (Leipzig, ach Leipzig – I still miss you!), on a youth camp in Norway (if anybody is looking for a motivated team member for any kind of camps, confirmation camps etc. – please let me know!), in the beautiful surrounding of the village of Tübingen (I love to play Doppelkopf (a card game), in Tessin and other places in Switzerland (mostly hiking – wonderful), as for example also in Zinal.
- Zinal: Zinal is a small village at the very end of a valley in Valais. But Zinal is not only a place, it stands for so much more. I had the opportunity to join an ecumenical family camp and to help with the children. It was a very spontaneous decision and instead of working with young adults as supposed in the beginning, I ended up taking care of a 6-year old boy with autism. I have to say – he is the best child on earth. We spent a splendid time together (he is incredibly clever and smart!) and I was able to experience the beauty of managing something pretty well – something I had always considered myself not very capable of. I still won’t become a kindergarten teacher (huge respects for all people working in that or a similar profession!), but this sense of not yet having explored all my potential creates a lot of energy.
- Moreover, Zinal was starting point for many changes – through these people I finally found a parish in Basel where I feel welcome and at home. I can’t imagine anymore how my world ever worked without these people. That also applies to the next point:
- Another thing that suddenly became important in my life is an association from and with young migrants in Basel. The association offers different activities, often they contain sports or food or both. The many foreign and unfamiliar names are still a challenge for my brain, but every time I also learn some new words in Turkish, Kurdish, Amharic, Arabic, Persian… whatever people speak. Next weekend (3 December) we’ll celebrate the yearly winter party – you are very welcome to join the celebrations!
- Sports: I’m fully enjoying the health and capacity of my body and I live it to the fullest. Unihockey (“floorball”), volleyball and aquagym are fixed constants in my week. Yes, aquagym. You do jumping jacks in the water, run miles and miles on the spot and waggle wildly with your arms to divide the water. Moses must have been a pretty strong guy (ok, he also had a little assistance). The community is great (many elderly ladies, all somehow kinky, lovely and very bright), my joints celebrate and so does my soul. Initially, I just wanted to go there once to see how it is. The exercises were fun and I had to laugh a lot because I felt quite stupid, bouncing awkwardly through the water. But the instructor didn’t change her facial expression, not once, even when I smiled at her in a slightly moronic way. I challenged myself to make her smile at least once at one point. Unfortunately, I had to realise that this would turn out to be a long-term project – so I bought a subscription and join the group devotedly once a week.
- Another part of the sports section is the Friday evening. At the moment I mostly spend it in a gym, together with around twenty other young people from all over the world. The happening is called “Games, Sport and Fun” and we play classical games like tag, dodge ball etc., organised by the association mentioned earlier. Afterwards we’ll all share a meal (falafel…) and tea in our favourite falafel-place, and I always feel a little like in Israel and Erasmus at the same time.
- Music: Also the accordion-orchestra is still part of my life. We practice diligently and mastered several gigs, for example at a jubilee celebration (a music stand crashed (not mine!), guests started dancing waltz – everything you need for a good concert), a “contemplative hour” and an Advent market. Of course I have to mention our big annual concert that took place in the end of September. It was a huge success and I had the honour of leading through the evening, as tour guide – the audience seemed to like it, and I certainly did as well. Now we’re already practicing for the next concert, which will take place on 3 November 2018 – make a mental note and join us!
- Taizé: One of the reasons I was explicitly looking for work in Switzerland was the announcement of the European Youth Meeting in Basel. Many things need to be prepared, but a very capable team is giving their best with all their energy – so I’m hopeful and confident that this will be a good meeting. We are still urgently looking for host families that are ready to welcome one ore more persons from 28 December until 1 January. If you know anybody who lives in Basel or nearby, please make them aware of the meeting. I really want to warmly recommend this event to you, wherever you might live. Do not miss this opportunity to experience a unique sense of community, belonging, hope, solidarity. Be welcome and don’t hesitate to contact me!
- Home: I still feel very comfortable in my shared flat – or house. Many projects have been going on, especially concerning our bicycle parking. It was a hard fight and a long, bureaucratic way, but we succeeded in the end. Along the way we participated in something called “Parking Day” to show how parking space can be used differently than with cars. But – see for yourself in this video. We are also planning a project to grow our own vegetables (or let’s say to grow even more of them). Sometimes we also dissect dead animals (a fieldfare a couple of weeks ago – incredibly exciting, the inner life of an animal…), play games, cook quince-jam, process an exceeding amount of pumpkins… we are certainly never bored.
- Other: Since I’m travelling to Biel every day (a veeeery long way) and spend a lot of time in the train, I started to look for new activities. One of them is crochet, and surprisingly you need less “delicate skills” than I thought. I’m already proudly wearing my first self-made hat and also a scarf. Now I’ll start knitting socks (because you can never know if your eternal source will quit one day) and the kind women at work are assisting me with their incredibly patience. If in any case you have knitting or crochet ideas yourself (mainly for useful things or clothes), samples, patterns, propositions – please let me know, I’m looking for inspiration!
Conclusion: I have definitely arrived here in Basel, another time. Outside it is cold and grey and wet, but my world is currently enlarging in huge steps, what I enjoy a lot. Sometimes I’m also a little surprised that there is so much and even much more to discover in a surrounding that I considered as familiar. But it is also encouraging to see it blossom and grow where many things also die and rot.
Preview: The next report will follow in the beginning of 2018 and contains brand-new information about my professional future, a review of the Taizé-meeting and other highly relevant issues.
Here a funny video with absolutely no sense, but I had to laugh a lot, the whole time.
Random Fact: Marsupials are extremely interesting. They have a very interesting reproductive system: “Female marsupials have two lateral vaginas, which lead to separate uteri, but both open externally through the same orifice. A third canal, the median vagina, is used for birth. This canal can be transitory or permanent.” And: “Most male marsupials, except for macropods and marsupial moles, have a bifurcated penis, separated into two columns, so that the penis has two ends corresponding to the females' two vaginas.“ I find that highly interesting.
Stay safe and sound,
Blessed Advent (yes, I am allowed to say that already now, next time it will be 2018!),
